Increasing Access to Cancer Treatment

Cervical Cancer is one of the leading causes of deaths among women in Tanzania. It is estimated that over 7000 annually, new cases of Cervical Cancer are diagnosed and about 4,000 deaths occur. Comprehensive Cancer treatment is FREE for Tanzanians at the Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI) in Dar-es-Salaam; the only cancer treatment facility where radiotherapy services are available. Even though this facility is available to the public, patients still face limited access to treatment because of reach to health care services. Majority of women diagnosed with cervical cancer leave in rural areas and come from poor income households where they cannot afford treatment. This is why Vodacom Tanzania Foundation intervened by facilitating transportation of women diagnosed with Cervical Cancer to ORCI and Bugando hospitals through M-Pesa mobile money system to enable women with cervical cancer receive bus fare through a network of ambassadors in communities who identify the women. Principal regions for the program are: Mbeya, Mwanza, Iringa, Songwe, Morogoro, Tanga, Mara, Geita and Njombe.
