DAR ES SALAAM, 4th April 2019 – Vodacom Tanzania said yesterday that the Tanzania Police Force had questioned certain employees, including MD Hisham Hendi, on allegations of fraudulent use of network facilities. Various charges have now been levelled against some of these employees in a Dar es Salaam Magistrate Court and are currently in police custody, including Mr Hendi. A bail application for the individuals in police custody will be heard in next few days at the same Court.

The charges also claim a “pecuniary loss” to the Government of Tanzania and the Tanzanian Communication Regulatory Authority of over 11 billion Tanzanian Shillings (circa R68 million).

Vodacom Tanzania reiterates that it will continue to cooperate with the investigation and that it upholds the highest standards of business integrity, ethics and good corporate governance. The Board of Vodacom Tanzania PLC has appointed Jacques Marais as Acting MD to ensure the company’s operations continue free of interruptions and has initiated an internal investigation into the matter.
